Men's Aviator Jacket: A Must-Have in Your Wardrobe
Gentlemen, the aviator jacket, also known as a pilot jacket, is making a strong comeback.
Perfect for the fall/winter season, this model has everything to please: design, cut, comfort...
A Historical Model
The aviator jacket was originally intended for military airplane pilots.
In high-altitude environments, the cold inside the cockpits was a real problem. The aviator jacket was then designed by the military to protect pilots from these conditions, featuring a highly insulated lining, tight closures around the waist, wrists, and neck, a wide collar, and a rugged exterior resistant to inclement weather. During World War I, jackets were made of sheepskin, fur, and sturdy leather.
Over the years, aviation progressed, and several iterations and different models of aviator and bomber jackets were created. In the United States, "B" jackets were generally made of sheepskin, while "A" model jackets were made of leather lined with wool, cotton, or silk.
The first famous aviator jacket is the Type A-1 model, released in 1927, which features a knitted wool waistband and cuffs, an outer layer made of capeskin (a type of sheepskin), two flap cargo pockets, and a thick cotton lining.
In 1931, the successor, the "A-2 model," was developed by the U.S. Army. It was primarily made from horsehide leather and featured reinforced pockets.
Aviator and bomber jackets continued to evolve within the military and remained popular among the American public during the second half of the 20th century. Then, in 1986, the style gained worldwide popularity thanks to the movie Top Gun, in which Tom Cruise wore a magnificent G-1 jacket. The "Pilot" style shone brightly.
